Woolton Hall is a small traditional catered hall located in leafy grounds hidden away on the Fallowfield campus in the heart of Manchester’s student area.
Built in 1959 Woolton is made up of five accommodation blocks plus the main building. The four undergraduate blocks Spencer, Lindsay, Morley and Cavendish house 45 students each plus a resident tutor. The accommodation is based on corridors of 15/16 rooms plus a bathroom and kitchen. The corridors are mixed sex and on average there are two or three ensuite rooms per corridor with the rest sharing the bathroom.
The post-graduate block, Ashley houses 15 students on a self-catering basis. Following the same style they share bathroom and kitchen facilities though with the kitchens being larger than in the undergraduate blocks.
The main building centres around a grand dining room where meals are served Monday to Friday. There is also a small bar with adjoining junior common room (JCR) which caters as a focal point for student life at Woolton. The building also houses two libraries, a TV room and the main kitchens. Upstairs is the warden’s flat along with some offices and the senior common room (SCR) which serves mainly as a conference facility.
The hall is built on a very traditional style with large well kept grounds and two lawns. The hall is hidden away in a quiet corner of the campus yet is only 2 minutes walk from the centre of Fallowfield which acts as the focal point for student life at The University of Manchester. The other halls of residence such as Owens Park and Oak House are only a moment’s walk and share campus facilities such as the Armitage Sports Centre and the 24 hour computer cluster.
Woolton has gone through an extensive refurbishment program this summer with new bathrooms and kitchens as well as cosmetic changes such as a complete repainting and new carpets as well as new bedroom furniture in some blocks. The bar has also gone through a refurbishment with new furniture bringing the hall into the 21st century but still retaining the traditional heart.
The hall, although being one of the smallest on the campus has a brilliant atmosphere. This is majorly advantaged by the fact people live on corridors and all eat together. The bar is very popular and is the place where most residents meet in the evening. The hall has a great social side but is still a quiet and relaxing place to study. The fact that the bedrooms and bathrooms are probably the largest on campus is also a plus.
The hall has a very strong pastoral team made up of four tutors lead by the warden, Dr Brendon Jones who is also the senior warden on the campus. The tutors provide pastoral care and support to students and one tutor is on duty every night.

The annual commemoration dinner will be taking place on Saturday 11th November. This commemorates the opening of the hall in 1959 by The Duke of Edinburgh.
The night is a formal event starting at 6.30 in the JCR. There will be a champagne reception followed by pre-dinner drinks in the bar. The formal meal starts at 7.30 in the dining room and will include some special VIP guests! After the meal there will be a band and then a disco with a late bar.
The night is a formal event and so suits and dresses are the suggested attire. Entrance to the meal is by ticket and only Woolton Hall residents are allowed, however everyone is welcome to the afterparty!

Below is a list of some of the events that happen every year at Woolton.
Friday 22nd September – Fresher’s week themed party
This year’s fresher’s week party will be a name party. Students should dress up as a character that starts with the same letter as their name. For example my name is Tom and I may dress up as a turtle or maybe even a tranny (you’ll have to wait and see!). There’ll be prizes for the best attempts and maybe even a prize for the worst! There’ll be a briilliant DJ and some drinking games (boat race, downing the yard etc.).
Early November – Commemoration dinner
The commemoration dinner is a formal event that happens in early November and commemorates the opening of the hall in 1959. Often seen as the best night of the year it starts off with a very formal dinner (suits and dresses please!) with some of the best food you’ve ever tasted and free wine! There’ll be a string quartet playing throughout dinner followed by a talk by the warden about the history of Woolton. After dinner the main band takes over allong with a DJ playing to the early hours. There’ll probably be some karaoky too towards the end of the night when people are very drunk!
December – Christmas party
A great way to prepare for Christmas! A nice meal to start off with (Woolton Hall Christmas dinner!) followed by the usual brilliant DJ, drinking games, party games and maybe even a visit from Father Chrismas if you’re lucky.
Late January – Post exams party
The best way to celebrate the end of exams, get very drunk!
Late March – Easter party
Early June – Summer party
Probably the most memorable party of the year as it runs right throughout the day. Starting around about midday there’s usually loads of bouncy castles and other amusements on the front lawn followed by a huge BBQ. Then the party to remember for a lifetime in the evening where you’ll both celebrate the end of exams and say goodbye to Woolton and your friends ready for the summer holiday.
